Horns Keep Going, Oust Mansfield to Advance to Regional Final

The Cedar Hill Longhorns continued their march to a second state championship in three years by defeating the Mansfield High School Tigers 41-35 last Saturday at Texas Stadium. The win moves the Longhorns to the Division 2 Regional finals, against Wylie. That tilt is set for 12 noon this Saturday at Texas Stadium

The Cedar Hill Longhorns (11-1), coming off huge playoff wins over Plano West and Southlake Carroll are in the throes of preparing for their third round Texas High School 5A State Playoff matchup. This Saturday at 12:00 noon at Texas Stadium the Longhorns attempt to move on to the Regional Finals by defeating next door neighbor, Mansfield High School (8-4).

Mansfield, who started the season slowly but picked up momentum heading into the playoffs, scored a huge upset win in the first round by knocking off the unbeaten number 3 team in the state Abilene Eagles. They followed that win with last week's victory over El Paso Montwood, 41-21.

HORNS SHOW THEY HAVE TRADITION TOO - BLAST SL CARROLL 31-18!

There seems to be a feeling in Texas High School football circles that when Southlake Carroll is your opponent in the playoffs, teams and their coaching staffs are supposed to show them a reverence that is usually reserved for royalty, high ranking political officials or the elite of society. Well, this past Saturday at Texas Stadium the Cedar Hill Longhorns showed no reverence for the self proclaimed Kings of High School football, as they rode the 41 carry, 241 yard performance of Baby Ben Malena and avenged last year's playoff lost to the Dragons by scoring 31 second half points, in route to a 31-18 victory.

Trailing 7-0 at the intermission, the optimism of a repeat of the Plano West miracle of a week earlier was dampened when the Dragons took the second half kick-off and marched 65 yards to a first and goal at the Longhorn 4 yard line. But the Horn's defense stiffened and held Carroll to a field goal. On the ensuing kick-off the Longhorn's Magic Man, LaQuan Harper busted a return of 65 yards and set the Longhorns up for a short 35 yard touchdown drive, that was capped by a four yard touchdown run by Malena.

Then the Longhorn defense showed Carroll a glimpse of what the remainder of their 2008 season would look like. On a third down inside their own 25, Carroll QB Drew Piland was sacked by Aaron Benson and coughed up the ball to defensive end Adrian Blaylock. Just four plays later Malena, running from the Wildcat formation racked up the touchdown that would put CH ahead to stay, 14-10.

Another Malena touchdown, his third of the day, a leaping 29 yard touchdown grab by Harper, on a beautifully thrown ball by Sophomore quarterback Driphus Jackson and a 22 yard field goal by Eduardo Camara would be more than enough to mitigate a meaningless late fourth quarter TD and two point conversion by the Dragons.

The game was over, but nobody remembered to tell the Longhorn players or Coaches. Plano West broke the cardinal rule in sports that clearly states that when you have the Champ on the ropes you MUST knock him out, or risk the consequences.

Down 21-0 at the half and 28-0 two minutes into the 3rd quarter, Cedar Hill climbed off the mat and scored 35 unanswered points to take the lead, only to see Plano West score a TD to knot the score with 1:13 left in the game. CH got the ball back, and while trying to move into field goal range for a potential game winner by kicker Eduardo Camara, Sophomore QB Driphus Jackson threw an interception that was returned to the CH 17 yard line with 56 seconds left in regulation. PW ran two running plays, and with six seconds showing on the clock attempted a 27 yard field goal for the win. The kick was wide left and the stage was set for three overtimes of heart-stopping football.

Down by a touchdown in the second overtime, the Longhorns faced a an almost sure game and season ending 4th and 29 from the PW 44 yard line. Driphus Jackson rolled to his left, avoided what looked to be a certain game finishing sack, and lofted a pass toward Senior WR Laquan Harper near the end zone. Harper, who was well covered by a Wolves cornerback, made a sensational leaping catch at the 2 yard line and lunged in for the touchdown. Camara's PAT tied the score, leaving the next bit of heroics to the 'Horn's defense.

In the third overtime the CH defense, which had been under attack all night, turned in the stop of the night. On a fourth and 12 from the CH 27, PW Head Coach Mike Hughes eschewed a go ahead 44 yard field goal attempt, only to see Senior QB Travis Wilson be dropped for a 12 yard loss by DE Tyler Washington. The stop gave the ball to the 'Horns with a chance to win the game. From the 25 of PW the 'Horns, behind the stellar running of Ben Malena and Brandon Davis, moved down to the five yard line. On second and goal the 'Horn's averted disaster by recovering a Malena fumble at the 6 yard line. Coach Joey McGuire wasted no time thereafter, hustling the sure footed Camara on for a 23 yard field goal that set off a celebration reminiscent of the '06 State Championship victory. The win advances CH to play the winner of this Saturday's SL Carroll - Colleyville Heritage game (10:00 a.m.@ Texas Stadium).

Another Win, Another Title - Plano West Draws Red Hot Horns

The Cedar Hill Longhorns racked up their second District Title in the last three years with a 64-30 drubbing of Irving Nimitz last Thursday evening.

The Longhorns completed a perfect District Season with the win and ran their season record to 9-1. The win sets up a first round playoff game at Texas Stadium this Thursday evening against Plano West. The Wolves (5-5) come out of the tough 8-5A district that Inclides perrenial powerhouses Allen and Plano.

'Horns Drop Irving.........D'Ville Up Next

Paced by Ben Malena's hard running and a key 4th quarter interception the Cedar Hill Longhorns held off a game Irving Tiger squad Friday night in Irving, 38-24.

Malena's 219 yard rushing was barely enough to offset a 10 catch, two touchdown performance from Irving's do everything WR Winfred Tennell. Still, the Longhorn win wasn't ensured until 6:30 remained in the contest. With the 'Horn's defense clinging to a precarious 31-24 lead, DB Elisha Olabode's interception of an errant Tiger pass and subsequent return to the Irving two yard line, set up Malena's clinching and final TD of the evening.

With the win the 'Horns improve to 5-1 on the season and stay undefeated (2-0) in Disrtict 8-5A. Irving suffered their first District loss after having won their first two 8-5A contests.

Next up for McGuire's group is to play host to streaking Duncanville. Cedar Hill's neighbors to the south have won three consecutuive games (two in District play), after losing to very stiff competition in three of their four non-district tilts. The Panthers are directed by new coach Jeff Dicus, who led Lake Travis to the 4A State Championship last year, befor taking the reins at Duncanville. Dicus employs a high powered, pass happy spread offense, that appears to be improving each passing week.

With first place in 8-5A on the line, Cedar Hill High School Coaches and Administrators urge all of Longhorn Nation to arrive early for the 7:30 kickoff, as another overflow, sell-out crowd is expected.
